The Intensive English for Communication (IEC) Program is designed for international and English as a Second Language (ESL) students and professionals who want to develop and improve their formal and practical English skills. Through an intensive learning format, our IEC program curriculum can help you improve your reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammatical skills.

Program Highlights

SDSU’s IEC program is designed to help you develop formal and communicative English language skills, which are useful in a variety of global contexts both inside and outside the classroom. Some of the highlights of this unique program include

  • Interaction with Native Speakers
    You’ll have the opportunity to practice English and learn about American culture by interacting with native speakers and volunteers in your classrooms.
  • Intramural Sports
    You can learn about and practice social conversations while playing team sports through the SDSU Aztec Recreation Center.
  • Tutoring and Homework Help
    Get academic support while practicing your English skills through weekly tutoring and homework assistance sessions.
  • Flexible Start Dates
    You can begin your studies after the term begins for four weeks or longer on any of our published flex entry dates.
  • Part-Time Study Schedule
    If you’re on a tourist visa, you may study in the program for up to 14 hours per week through a customized schedule.

Program Structure and Schedule

SDSU’s IEC program contains a total of seven levels ranging from beginner to advanced. You’ll take a series of placement tests that will assess your current reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Your placement in the IEC program will be determined by the average scores of these tests.

For all levels, the IEC program is broken down into a series of core and additional classes.

Core Classes
At the heart of SDSU’s IEC program is a series of core classes. You’ll take courses in writing, listening, speaking, reading, and grammar. These core classes can  help you develop both formal and informal communication in the English language.

Additional Classes
In addition to the core classes, you’ll also take classes focused on developing your practical communication skills and your understanding of American Culture.

Sample Schedule
IEC students will enroll in the following classes for 18-21 hours per week:

Afternoon Communication Practice Practical Speaking Skills

Admission Requirements

This program is open to current international and English as a Second Language (ESL) SDSU students. Prior instruction in English is preferred.
